North Atlantic Native Sheep and Wool Conference eitur ráðstevnan, sum júst hevur verið í Havn. Ráðstevnan byrjaði 15.september og endaði í gjár.
Á móttøku hóskvøldið helt Kristiana Winther Poulsen, býráðslimur í Tórshavnar býráð, røðu. Hon vísti millum annað á týdningin, ið ull hevur havt í Føroyum, og at sniðgeving við millum øðrum tógvi, er vorðin vinnuvegur hjá nógvum í dag.
Her er brot úr røðuni, ið Kristianna Winther Poulsen, býráðslimur, helt á móttøkuni í Múllers Pakkhúsi:
"As you may already noticed, we have significant number of sheep in the Faroe Islands.
It is often said that there are around eigthy thousand sheep, wich means that there are more sheep than people in the Faroe Islands.

Ull er Føroya gull. Wool is the gold of the Faroes. This is a popular saying which illustrates our past when wool and knitted garments such as sweaters and socks were our main exports and our only source of income for centeuries.

In the Faroese language, we have many terms associated with sheep, wool, and meat, and as regards wool, we have almost countless names for colours.
A sheep is not simply brown, black, or withe. Those who know sheep well use several other terms, and it´s always delightful, especcially when up in the hills, to hear people naming and identifying the sheep. In the "Sheepbook", by Robert Joensen, there are around 250 names for the colours of sheep.##med4##

This building is a storehouse dating back to the eigtheen-nineties when it served as storage for salt, and for the shipping companies’ supplies with the sailmakers and their workshop. The storehouse and its activities were crucial for the islands’ main export: salted cod.
By then, the immense importance and total dominance of sheep and wool in the agricultural society had slowly come to an end, and the richness of the sea had taken over and has been our main exports ever since.

Today, wool and sheep are still a part of modern Faroe Islands, where Faroese design crafted from wool and a distinct Faroese culinary culture feauring various sheep products play an essential role.
You may already seen examples of this here in Tórshavn, on your guided walk in the city center. You may have noticed that we have several shops showcasing Faroese designs. And thats´s something we can truly take pride in.
Elsewhere in the city, we have restaurants offering Faroese menus, often featuring lamb and mutton, where traditional and contemporary practices come together beautifully.

##med8##In a few weeks, it will be time to gather the flocks, as the autumn hills are walked.
In many places, this is a very special time of the year when families, neighbours, and friends come together. There is much talk about sheep, weights, and other details.

But we should also focus more on wool, as Faroese desing products are not just a tradition but also an industry, an export opportunity, and I have no doubt that this sector can continue to thrive. You have already shown your skills and talent."
